Before the humans had the riding skills to mount a horse there only mode of transportation was by their feet, possible a canoe. If one tribe got sick it stay with that tribe. Even if they went to a distant tribe usually that person did not either make it or got better before he reach that tribe. When he a horse he could travel faster and if sick spread that disease to another tribe.

Life was rough. People starve on a regular basics. The weak die off and the strong live on. People usually watch other animals eat something and they ate it. We were meat eaters and rarely ate plants even unless they saw a animal eat it.

It was only when people went from hunting food to becoming farmers did life become interesting. If one person got sick the whole village got sick, when they starting to herd animals those animals and the animal diseases infect the farmers. A novel diseases like cow pox when it mutated it became Small Pox which could wipe out a good potion of a village, in many cases cities in which people fled from them. Fast forward to the year 2009.

In 2009 a new virus appear in the US, then spread around the world within days because of air travel. This virus was designated as influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 virus. It killed mainly the young children and middle-age adults whereas the older generation fair fairly well because they might have built up a immunity because of past outbreaks of influenza types of flu. Ten years later this new strain COVID-19 which is highly contagious seems to target those over 60 with health problems being a underling factor. No one is safe. Wear a face mask while outside or around other people.

Being so new there is no vaccine for it, but one is possible in the pipeline. Nor there might be none by the time this current type of flu burns itself out. But the world or better the countries who saw this plague in 2009 prepared for the next one. The next being the latest one (COVID-19 ) to happen.

All across the world, countries are doing the same as had China in restricting movement of it citizens. Telling them where and how many can meet in any location. All events have been cancelled.

The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most severe pandemic in recent history. It was caused by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian origin. Although there is not universal consensus regarding where the virus originated, it spread worldwide during 1918-1919.  In the United States, it was first identified in military personnel in spring 1918. Who got it from a mess sergeant at Camp Funston in Fort Riley, Kansas who contracted from something on the wind. He in turn cough all over the food being serve and by the way was the first one to die of it.

It is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States. Mortality was high in people younger than 5 years old, 20-40 years old, and 65 years and older. The high mortality in healthy people, including those in the 20-40 year age group, was a unique feature of this pandemic.

It burn itself out as it did not stay around very long in the USA. It travel in Europe by train as troops return home from the war. It in turn by ship to the far corners of the world.

Animals are a good source for various forms of influenzas since they carry many that is deadly to humans. But the bad thing is that when humans get such flues they can transmute them to animals as well.

1998: Influenza virus surveillance in swine, conducted by the US Department of Agriculture, begins in the United States. A virus that is a hybrid of human, bird and swine flu viruses is detected in pigs. This virus becomes the dominant flu virus in U.S. pigs by 1999.

The different between 2009 and today is the Internet. More people can be warn just by their iPhone, tablets and such devices then could be inform 10 years ago. This virus moved as reported in China December 3, 2019 to the rest of the world by it using air travel and by sea. It has been slowed by the Internet telling every one about the virus. Even heads of governments who caution for claim put into action from what they learn in 2009.

The flu of 2015-2016 season killed 24-60,000. This one could kill double or triple that number since it is highly contagious. Wearing a face mask can save you from getting another person germs. A wet soapy face cloth carried in a plastic bag is better than a bottle of hand sanitizer.
